Halloween…
This poem was inspired by three of my Substack friends who all suggested variations on the topic.
Links to their Substacks are below. Not only are they brilliant writers, but they’ve been incredibly supportive of me and many others.
Go check them out!
Have a great Halloween 👻.
I’ve always enjoyed Halloween,
we get to use the word ghouls.
It sort of reminds me of goulash,
one of my very favourite foods.
~
A much bigger deal in America,
than over this side of the pond.
It’s not that we don’t have it,
but there are bigger fish we fry.
~
It’s Bonfire Night in November,
my birthday was only last week.
In between these two behemoths,
we do squeeze in trick or treat.
~
At our house we make an effort,
well we don’t pretend not to be in.
Neighbourhood kids come knocking,
or just throw eggs straight at the car.
~
We set out a bowl of sweets (candy),
bribes for not burning down the house.
There’s always a few cheeky monkeys,
who ask us for some money instead.
~
I don’t really dress up for the occasion,
as my natural style is horrific enough.
Our local community police officer,
has asked me not to answer the door.
~
Apparently the children have complained,
about the monster that lives in our house.
Far too scary for them to be looking at,
and they don’t like my poems to boot.
~
So whatever you’re doing this evening,
have yourself a most wonderful time.
I look forward to seeing the photos,
and reading stories of memories made.

Happy day after Halloween, Phil.
I feel safe to go out now the goulash is gone.
Fireworks this evening
(I miss carving turnips back in the days before Blighty discovered Pumpkins…)
I read this and now I am happier than I was before. Thanks for that ☺️ and happy Halloween 🎃🦇
