Let It Be…
This poem was inspired by a writing prompt from the incredibly supportive @MJ Polk at The Southern Copywriter Blog (link below).
He has a new publication out called Stories From The Jukebox where he uses a famous song title to stimulate creativity.
The first song is Let It Be By The Beatles.
I attempted a short poem but, before I get to that, he also asked for responses to a few questions. You can find my answers below:
Where were you when you first heard this song?
It’s difficult to say exactly as I grew up listening to The Beatles. My Dad was a huge fan.
An early memory of it would be a family holiday to the South of France.
We used to drive from Yorkshire, all the way. Mum and Dad upfront, four (later five) kids crammed in the back.
Dad always made several mix tapes for the journey and, of course, The Beatles featured heavily. We all knew all the words and would sing along as a family.
Later, we would have some challenging times but, generally, I was very lucky. This is a positive memory so thanks to Paul and his Mum.
Does Let It Be say something special to you?
I think this is definitely a song that means different things to different people.
I read somewhere that the words ‘Let it Be’ were something Mary McCartney used to say about arguments in their household before she tragically died. She didn’t want anyone to leave things unresolved before they went to bed.
No idea if this is true, or not, but this is the message I’ve always taken from the song.
Have Paul’s lyrics helped you through a tough time in your life?
They should have, I agree with the sentiment. In my life, I have failed to listen to ‘Mother Mary’ and I have allowed silly disputes to escalate and damage relationships beyond repair. One of these was with my brother, who died at the age of forty-nine. I will write more about that one day…
Can you come up with a poem, micro, or short story using this theme?
I’ll try ☺️
Let It Be…
For Alistair (RIP).
~
The Beatles wrote this,
Paul McCartney, to be precise.
Words from his late mother, Mary,
who appeared one night in a dream.
~
She died quite young, did Mary,
gave a meaning to her beautiful words.
We should learn the art of forgiveness,
as one day it may be too late.
~
Don’t leave an argument simmering,
before you go to bed at night.
Find a way to move past it,
let your love put out the fight.
~
So if you find yourself in conflict,
causing loss that burns at your heart.
Don’t wait until tomorrow,
Let It Be, just Let It Be ❤️
