A Writing Competition.

Something a little different, from me anyway.

Today’s poem is a writing prompt. I’d really like you to use it as a foundation for some words of your own that help me to work out Whodunnit?

  1. It could be a short story (1000 word limit).

  2. A poem of your own.

  3. An essay detailing your theory as to who the killer is.

  4. A simple guess and a short rationale.

  5. Something else (the world is your oyster).

Prizes are available for your efforts.

First prize: A paid subscription (monthly) which I will commit to for at least twelve months.

Second prize: I’ll restack and recommend/subscribe (free) if I haven’t already. Up to five of these prizes available, depending on number of submissions.

Just for entering: A sense of satisfaction that you’ve helped to get a violent killer off the streets.

Judging Criteria?

I want to be entertained, amused, enlightened, convinced and be made jealous by the quality of your submission. Be as ‘out there’ as you like. Creativity and innovation will get the job done.

The judging panel will consist of me, the wife, kid number two, kid number one if I can get him to read any at Camp America, and Buddy the dog.

How To Submit?

Submissions can be made by providing a link in the comments of this post.

Deadline?

Saturday 23rd August with winners announced on Sunday 24th August.

Good luck and have fun.

Whodunnit…

Freddie Jones has been murdered.

~

His body discovered in the street,

close to the betting shop he ran.

Stabbed three times in the back,

the killer then fled into the night.

~

Jake the Snake is a suspect.

~

He holds a grudge against the victim,

over money he believed he was owed.

He was close to the scene of the crime,

and he’s known as a violent man.

~

Ethel was Freddie’s girlfriend.

~

She’s not always been exclusive,

although that would be news to him.

The truth is she’d wanted out,

once she’d seen Jake’s Snake.

~

Harry didn’t even know him.

~

But he enjoyed a good old murder,

whenever the opportunity arose.

He’d definitely been in the area,

other bodies not yet exposed.

~

Brenda Barnes had a motive.

~

Her love for Freddie was strong,

she’s felt that way for decades.

He’d recently told her to ‘do one’,

that his heart belonged elsewhere.

~

The local Godfather is possible.

~

Our victim did mix in some circles,

that attracted some criminal types.

There’ll probably be an alibi,

a wall of silence as well.

~

I’m the police officer in charge.

~

I bring the guilty to justice,

in my own particular way.

Some might say I’m corrupt,

but we all have bills to pay.

~

Help required from Substack.

~

To finally unmask whodunnit,

and catch a killer at large.

Who do you think it was?

Can you claim the reward!

Please share so others can have a go. We all need to do our bit to catch this scoundrel.

Share

If you enjoyed doing this let me know, maybe I’ll do another.
